Berchman’s Road near Clifton, Karachi was inaugurated on November 16 by Iftikhar Ali Shallwani, commissioner of Karachi, Fazal Karim Dadabhoy, honorary consul of Ivory Coast, in presence of teachers, nuns, students and parents.

Born in Ireland’s County Clare in 1930, Sr Berchmans joined the Convent of Jesus and Mary in 1951 in Willesden, London. Sister Berchmans came to Pakistan at the age of 24 and has spent 58 of her 60 years teaching in the Muslim nation.

In 2012, she was awarded the Sitara-i-Quaid-i-Azam – one of the highest civil awards given by the president of Pakistan. The award recognized her “constant adherence to the call of duty over a span of 59 years, which has made Sister Berchmans a living example to emulate”.

Sister Berchmans was awarded the Benedict Medal by St Mary’s University, London in recognition of a lifetime of “teaching and promoting interfaith relations” in Pakistan in 2019.

Sr Berchmans inspired thousands of students and taught Pakistan’s former Prime Minister, the late Benazir Bhutto, as well as Nobel laureate Nergis Mavalvala.

She taught Muslim, Christian, Parsi and Hindu children at the Convents of Jesus and Mary Schools in Lahore, Murree and Karachi.

"Tree, tree & trees"- CJM's collaboration with Misbah Momin Foundation

22nd October 2020. A day that began with excited hearts and smiling faces. 11s, 10-Cambridge and 10-Matriculation; all shared the same reverence. A hope that this day will bring a change of hearts, a change of mindsets. With meticulous uniforms the girls proceeded to the ground for the prestigious ceremony to be held under the MMF, revolving around the dire need to start tree plantations. It had been labelled as 'Tree, Tree and Trees'.

Beautiful artwork was contributed by students of the Junior and Kindergarten Sections. Hence, removing any sort of doubt that the conservation of the environment was limited to any particular age. The school gardeners were also invited to attend the ceremony and guide the students during the plantation.

The event commenced with the merry entrance of our dear Sister Pilar and community along with Ms. Misbah Momin and her staff. Beautiful bouquets were presented by the Headgirl, Ieshal Javed and the Captains. The event began with a speech by the Headgirl, who expressed her gratitude on behalf of the school to Sister Pilar and the MMF for providing the girls with such a life changing opportunity. This was followed by the principal's address and henceforth, a speech by Ms. Misbah Momin, who explained how CJM reformed her and had been her constant source of pride and support.

Next in line were beautiful couplets recited by the Thevenet Centre students. They were followed by Kindergarten students who displayed their colourful paintings. This was followed by a skit under the lead of Sister Erum, echoing the importance of planting more trees. The podium was then taken by the Games Captain who recited a very thought-provoking poem about the tyranny that is inflicted on these poor beings. The speeches were wrapped up by the Prefect, who called up each and every individual present to understand the need of the hour and in the light of our dear Principal's quote  'Let the Earth grow in peace', called upon each attendee to make a pledge to be the protectors, not the destroyers.

In the end, the Sisters and MMF surprised the students by giving them a small treat of biscuits and juice. The smiles that lit up their faces were worth capturing in our very own Ms Silwat's camera.

At last, the time came when the students left their seats and proceeded for the plantation process. It was truly a scene of great reverence and pride seeing the young hands and minds being so enthusiastic in participating in the event.

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

You are well aware that the Social Media is to be used with great responsibility. What is written and shared becomes public knowledge immediately.

Recently, the school has been targeted and slandered. As a Principal of this institution, which has served Pakistan for the past 144 years, I am thoroughly appalled and disappointed and I feel my twenty years serving the school here have been futile.

I firmly believe that truth will triumph. This is the time for you to stand up for truth and justice, the values you have learned in character building.
